Whenever a church prepares for a major anniversary, there is wisdom in pausing to celebrate our history as a community of faith and to reflect on where we are going. These are holy conversations. Holy in that they are set apart by a celebratory moment in time to think about our identity as a congregation, our sense of purpose as disciples of Christ, and where God is calling us as we step into our next chapter of ministry together.
The truth is many churches arrive at these anniversary celebrations to have these conversations and end up in a capital campaign! Been there done that. On the eve of Bryn Mawr’s 150th anniversary in 2023, we have the unique opportunity to focus solely on mission and vision by gathering around these kinds of questions: Who are we as a community of faith and what are the core values of this congregation that we want to continue to affirm? Who is the neighbor God is calling us to serve now and in the coming years? What do we believe God is calling us to be and to do as a congregation?
Since last September, the 150th Vision Committee has been meeting to create a process by which as many congregants as possible will be able to participate in this church-wide conversation. The committee is comprised of longtime and newer members who represent a diversity of interests and ages: Elliot Dee, John Frazier, Carolyn Gerrish, Joan LaLeike, Sarah Reiner, Steve Udicious and Ashley Whamond. This team has introduced their work to the Session, Trustees and Deacons and are now hosting three public forums this month to introduce the wider congregation to our discernment process and our future plans for continuing this holy conversation. We want you to join the conversation from the beginning!
Here are the opportunities in the next two weeks:
- Wed., May 11, 6:00 p.m. dinner, followed by the forum from 6:30-7:30 p.m., Congregational Hall
- Tues., May 17, 7:00-8:00 p.m., Virtual Public Forum, Zoom
- Sun., May 22, 11:15-12:15 p.m., Fullerton Room
We want to hear from you about your passion for ministry, your sense of calling, and how you believe our congregation can respond in faith and faithfulness to a rapidly changing world of need around us. Sign up and join us in the coming weeks as together we discern the bold faithfulness to which God calls us in mission and ministry today and in the years to come.
